Born in 1978, Hala Salah Eldin Ali was raised in Tanta, a city right in the middle of the Nile Delta of Egypt. Working her way into public schools, she has received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Tanta University, 1999. Her first encounter with translation was rendering the English text of An Artist of the Floating World by British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro into Arabic. She went on to translate The Gilgul of Park Avenue: An Anthology of American Short Fiction by various authors, My Hope for Peace by Egyptian former first lady Jehan Elsadat, and A Girl in Paris by Iranian singer Shusha Guppy. She worked as a translator with Ayman El-sayyad in Weghat Nazar Magazine (Cairo) from March 2006 till July 2009.

In April 2006, she has single-handedly established Albawtaka Review and has been its editor and permissions manager ever since. Albawtaka Review is an Arabic independent non-profit online quarterly concerned with translating English short fiction. Again, in July 2010, she has embarked on another literary initiative when she established Albawtaka Publishing House. In addition to publishing anthologies of Albawtaka Review's short fiction, the publishing house aims to print translations of contemporary English fiction into Arabic.

And in collaboration with The Arab Fund of Arts and Culture, Albawtaka Publishing House has published three anthologies of short fiction edited by Hala: Sharp Senses: First Book of Albawtaka, Ghosts With No Maps: Second Book of Albawtaka, and Hidden Faces: Third Book of Albawtaka.  "It is a happy collaboration," she says. In January 2012, she has received a grant from The British Council in Cairo to publish three issues of Albawtaka Review, and in July 2012, she was surprised to win another grant from The Arab Fund of Arts and Culture to publish four issues of Albawtaka Review and Brush With Fate: Voices from Wales - a volume of translated short stories by Welsh authors. But surprises never end, again, she received a grant from The British Council in Cairo in 2013 and another grant from UNESCO IFPC to produce four issues of Albawtaka Review and an audio book for the blind and visually impaired youth in Egypt and Libya.

And for her Poland-based partner, Audioteka (http://meet.audioteka.com), she is the literary consultant and copyrights manager of the project “Voices From the Gulf”, a series of audio books by Gulf authors. By the end of 2015, both partners will also launch the first contemporary audiobook online store in the Arab World.
